You might be used to seeing Jason Bateman play the sarcastic straight man, like in Arrested Development or Game Night. But the Emmy-winning actor and director is also ace at portraying characters with dark and exceedingly creepy secrets, like in Ozark, The Gift, and HBO's upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider.
In the series, which draws its story from King's 2018 novel, Bateman plays beloved family man and little league coach Terry Maitland who is accused of raping and slaughtering a young boy in his small town when Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) finds his prints all over the murder scene. But, in addition to Terrence's insistence that he's innocent, the police start finding striking inconsistencies surrounding the crime that just aren't adding up. Did Terry really commit such a heinous act? Or is someone — or something — else responsible?
The 10-episode series also stars Cynthia Erivo, Bill Camp, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson, and Yul Vázquez, and premieres on Jan. 12. Watch the spooky trailer above!
