When life gives Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo lemons, they know how to turn them into chart-topping No. 1 hits. Less than a week after the release of Rodrigo's "Deja Vu" music video, YouTube user Adamusic mashed up the song with Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer," and it's the dream team collaboration we've been waiting for. Swifties and Livies alike gathered in the YouTube comments section to gush over the perfect harmony of their voices, and we're craving an IRL joint album now more than ever.
"Thank you, everyone for coming to the wedding of 'Cruel Summer' and 'Deja Vu,'" one commenter wrote of the song, which has blown up on TikTok. Another added, "'Deja Vu' unironically gave many of us deja vu because it shares so much in common with 'Cruel Summer.' (although they're still both unique in their own ways.) [sic] Definitely sister songs." Stylistically, fans have been drawing comparisons between the two songs and pointing out that "Drivers License" is to Rodrigo what "Getaway Car" was to Swift.
We now have all the more reason to keep our eyes and ears open for Rodrigo's debut album release on May 21 and any musical comparisons that may arise. Give the full "Cruel Summer" x "Deja Vu" mashup a listen here, and then please enjoy this Taylor Swift Spotify playlist while we eagerly await Rodrigo's 2021 equivalent of "Blank Space."
